About Mrs. Sylvester
I am the product of great teachers. Throughout my life caring and involved educators have influenced and guided me along the path toward success. This passion for helping children learn and grow has been passed on to me, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a language arts and yearbook teacher. This is my fifth year at Pine View Middle School, and I know it will be another great year!
I spent the majority of my own growing-up in the red dirt of Diamond Valley, Utah (just north of Snow Canyon). The red dirt of this area now runs in my veins! I love St. George, its rich history, its beautiful landscape, and the wonderful people here.
I have a deep passion for the English language. As a child I created fantastical stories about the bugs in the
backyard and the goblin under the patio--all carefully documented in crayon. Involved teachers throughout my entire education experience recognized my interest in language arts, and they went out of their way to help me foster a talent in creative and academic writing, along with a passion for exploring and learning from the literature of great authors past and present. It is my privilege and my hope to do the same for my students.
I have many hobbies and interests that I try to squeeze into my spare time. From a young age I was musically inclined. I have had many opportunities since I was a small child to participate in musical groups--including the Dixie High School Madrigals--and as a piano and organ accompanist and choir director. Singing and playing piano continue to be some of my greatest joys. I love to cook and decorate cakes as well. At home I hardly ever make the same dish twice because my Pinterest folder is full of too many fun, new recipes I am dying to try. I also love to travel and hike. I enjoy learning about new cultures--especially their food and literature!--seeing the stunning sites around the world, and trying new things like snorkeling and cliff diving. The best part of traveling, however, is getting to spend time with my family.
My greatest joy is my family. My amazing husband and I were married in February 2016. I am the proud mommy of a 7-year-old son from a previous marriage; we adopted our little girl as a baby, and she is now a wild 2-year-old; and we were blessed to have another son born to us in February 2018. Being a mother is the most beautiful and rewarding opportunity I have had. My sweet (and sometimes tyrannical) children provide me with new adventures and wonder every day as I help them learn and grow.
I have enjoyed every bit of my educational journey. After graduating from Dixie High School, I moved to Ephraim, Utah to begin my college years at Snow College. While at Snow College, I was able to gain experience as an English tutor. Several pieces of my poetry also received awards and were published in the Snow College literary journal, Weeds. After earning an Associate of Arts degree from Snow College, I moved back to St. George, Utah. I continued my education at Dixie State University, earning a Bachelors of Science Degree in English Secondary Education. During my time there I was a featured reader in the campus's “Storm the Mic,” and was given the opportunity to present research papers at various functions, including DSU's Research Day. Currently, I am continuing my learning by pursuing a Master's Degree in Education with an Administration License at Southern Utah University, and will graduate at the end of Summer 2020.
My employment and volunteer work has given me many opportunities to work with people from all walks of life, however, my most rewarding times are those spent working with the young people of the St. George community. They have such bright minds and amazing potential! I certainly enjoy giving those bright minds a workout in my class!
